In support of International Women’s Day Velo magazine shared stories of women in cycling. One story stuck out to us at the La Crosse Omnium because it was a recent participant, who is also registered for 2024. Danielle Ravnikar is a relatively new pro from across the river in Minnesota. We were able to ask her a few questions about her experiences as a professional dancer, cyclist, and participant of this fine race. Danielle, fresh off an exciting first race of the season with her new professional team, was kind enough to share with us.
La Crosse Omnium: Tell us your favorite or most unique story from working with the Vikings.
Danielle Ravnikar: There were countless once in a lifetime opportunities the Vikings organization led me to. From meeting celebrities, to dancing for a country singer during halftime, to presenting awards to notable players. The most memorable experience I had while with the team was being chosen to go to the Masonic Children’s Hospital at Christmas time to spend time with some of the kid’s being treated at the Hospital. It was very special to bring some positivity and excitement to the children and families. It instilled in me the idea that a simple smile and nice words can go a long way. No matter who I meet now, I try to make a point to be a reason they smile.
LO: Did any lessons carry over from your time as a cheerleader or dancer into being a professional cyclist?
DR: Cycling and dance wouldn’t seem like they align with shared skill, but one would be surprised. The body awareness I had to be a professional dancer has come into play many times as a cyclist. From awareness of what leg muscles are working and being able to switch between hamstrings and quads, to core stability while leaning and working with the bike. Dance on the bike!
LO: How many years have you been coming to the Omnium? Do you have any unfinished business in 2024?
DR: 2024 will be my second time racing the La Crosse Omnium. 2023 was my first year at the event and I was thoroughly impressed with how professionally the race was run. The courses are also top tier for the midwest. I do have my sights set on taking the QOM on the TT course this year, I am 5 seconds away from the record with my time last year and have a fire lit to go hard this year.
LO: What is your favorite part of bike racing? Favorite part of the Omnium?
DR: Racing my bike has taken me to parts of the world that leave me speechless with how beautiful this world is. From Silver City, New Mexico to Ireland I am so thankful I get to experience the world on two wheels while pursuing a passion, and of course pushing my limits and bettering my best along the way. My favorite part of the Omnium is the fact that this is a premier race right here in the Midwest!
